Ask Dottie.....Hi Elliott!
Hi Elliott,
What a GREAT question!!
I guess the most important thing i would say is...MOVING!
Movement is weight bearing and the first step to success! Now what exercises are best....hmmm...I would say the ones you are most likely to do which means...find something you are passionate about, enjoy doing and make a work out from that. Thats a great way to make sure you stay active! Anyone can pay top dollar for the best instructor/trainer with the best researched advice on what exercises, etc but if you don't do it, it will be for nothing so that is why I really like to encourage people to "find their passion", what will make them "personally move, exercise, train"
As for specific training, i think weights are a great way to create a demand on your body to work. It really depends on what you like to do and how much weight you can safely handle in the appropriate form. To start i would suggest just simply getting up and down from a chair (like a squat) 10 times without using your hands. As time goes on using anywhere from 3lb dumbbells to as high as you'd lie-20lb or more but again, it is....
It is the form and emotion that you do these with that really matters. Train with passion, with purpose whether you are lifting a can of soup or a 25lb dumbbell and you will be creating a need for your body to adapt in a healthy way form that.
Circuit training at the gym is ok, using a workout tape at home with some small weights is ok, doing some heavy weights (with supervision from a trainer or knowledgeable friend) at the gym is ok, going on a walk and climbing some stadium stairs is ok, ...get it-it really is the process of moving your body with purpose in the correct way that is the best exercise of all and being committed and consistent to doing this at least 5 times a week-mix up the routine and training so you don't get bored.
My other suggestion that is very important is to help with these side effects of the medications is to make sure you have quality protein daily to feed the muscles what they need and starve off muscle wasting. You can make good choices with meals and sticking to natural foods and no processed and also having a good quality protein in a shake.
Keep moving Elliott and train doing what you love-it will never lead you wrong!
SO HAppy you are LIVING LIFE FULLY! You make me proud!
