Lucky Girl, It's in the genes...
I have been lucky in my life to have someone like my dad who not only has taught me the right things to do through my life but has showed them by example over and over again.
I was reminded how fortunate I am again last Tuesday when I got a call from the ER. My dad, while doing a favor for a friend, decided to take a "short cut" down a hill while he was walking and fell. He not only fell, he tumbled and landed on the railroad track busting his head up requiring 65 staples in his head, a fractured right hand and several bruises including a big black eye. From the moment I saw him he had his attitude of "it could have been worse" and laughed through the pain. All the while, worried about his friend getting the items he was bringing to her. Amazing man.
He has continued to be in pain, be uncomfortable and challenged in many ways trying to live his life since then-he is very independent and does not like to ask for help, yet he has 'allowed it and has said thank you over and over again". "No dad, I say, Thank You"
I am honored to be able to take care of him now and each day I am learning what a positive attitude is , how we can a choice on how to deal with a difficult situation, how to overcome challenges, is truly about. He has taught me these things through words and actions since I was a little girl and I learn something more each and every time.
So, as I get ready to bring him to get yet another xray on his neck and another doctor apt for his arm today I am reminded that my challenges i have today, this week, are just pieces of life that happen and it is my job to approach them with a grateful heart and mind and go through them with determination and purpose-purpose to give the best I can to each and every step through life I am handed.
I believe this 76 year old man who has always helped others and has always been grateful for what he has and has taken the best of every situation and left the worst on the ground, not giving it energy, could teach us all something today. So, I asked him that just now and this is what he said...
"Do what your heart speaks and don't let your mind and fears get in the way, be grateful for what you have in life and strengthen what you can, leave the rest behind. Treat others with kindness and compassion always and you will receive back more than you give. Live each day to the fullest, each and every day."
Thanks Dad.......
I am one lucky girl....May you all be grateful for today and all the gifts in life you have....
